Mr Rix read Medicine at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, graduating in 1991. He specialised as a Urologist on the Edinburgh urology rotation. In 2004 he was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in the Colchester Urology Department.
In 2005 Mr Rix started developing expertise in HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate), proven to be more effective than traditional prostate operations. He is one of a group of consultant urological surgeon mentors teaching the procedure to other surgeons throughout the UK and abroad. He regularly accepts referrals for larger prostates or difficult cases from other hospitals both locally and further away.
He was the founder of the Colchester Urology Department Stone Service, introducing flexible ureterorenoscopy, laser stone management and PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy).
In 2006 he was one of the first urologists in Colchester to perform a laparoscopic nephrectomy for kidney cancer and has since also developed a specialist practice in laparoscopic pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction.
Mr Rix has run a regular paediatric urology clinic and a dedicated paediatric operating list at Colchester for many years.
